'Salinger' Is a Bio Gone Bad
'I can't wait to forget this movie,' says Peter Travers
Peter Travers reviews Salinger this week, the new documentary about J.D. Salinger, the reclusive, legendary author of The Catcher in the Rye. Director Shane Salerno's film features interviews with the writer's former lovers and peers, in addition to multiple reenactments, as there's virtually no footage of Salinger ever leaving his home. Still, Travers doesn't buy it.

"This is a piece of processed cheese. It's like Velveeta. It's like the worst kind of bio you can see," he says. According to our senior writer, the film is far too long, running at nearly two hours and twenty minutes (he says it could have been done in 90 minutes). Adds Travers: "[Salinger] represented a hatred of cliche. He hated fame-whoring, he hated bombast. He hated anything that was over-long."

The high point for our critic was the announcement that five previously unreleased Salinger titles are scheduled for release in the coming years. "I can't wait to read those books," he says. "And I can't wait to forget this movie."
