Gleeks will get the chance to say goodbye to "Glee" star Cory Monteith on Thursday (October 10) night, remembering him and his character, Finn Hudson.
As is typical of the series, songs have been handpicked to help weave together the story as the cast joins together to pay tribute to Finn in the episode titled "The Quarterback."
It reportedly takes place weeks after Finn's death on the series and the cause of death is likely to remain a mystery. (Monteith died on July 13 at the age of 31 from a mixed drug toxicity.) Show creator, Ryan Murphy, has said that the episode was "incredibly difficult to work on" and added that the episode's title not only refers to Finn's high school football career, but also Monteith's role among the cast.
With "Glee" slated to air tonight, MTV News is taking a look at the origin of the songs the cast will perform during what is expected to be an emotional episode.
'I'll Stand By You'
While it has since been covered by the likes of Shakira and Carrie Underwood, the rock ballad was first recorded by The Pretenders and released on their 1994 album Last of the Independents. This week Mercedes will perform the song.
'If I Die Young'
The track was originally performed by The Band Perry and sky-rocketed the country trio to crossover fame. It served as a single off the group's 2010 self-titled debut album, earning them Grammy Awards nods. This week, "Glee" mean girl Santana will perform the song.
Naya spoke to MTV News over the summer and she said that shooting the episode was "horrible," adding, "So many, so many [memories of Cory]. He was an amazing guy and I definitely miss him."
'Fire and Rain'
James Taylor recorded the track for his 1970 release, Sweet Baby James, and has said that the song was inspired, in part, by his own struggles with mental illness and addiction. In the years since its release, it has been covered by everyone from Babyface to Pink to Willie Nelson. This week, Sam and Artie (Chord Overstreet and Kevin McHale) will put a "Glee" spin on the classic acoustic track.
'No Surrender'
Originally performed by Bruce Springsteen and featured on his classic 1984 album release Born in the U.S.A., Puck (Mark Salling), the Gleek with a rock and roll spirit, will sing the song in tribute to his best pal and fellow football star, Finn.
'Seasons Of Love'
The song originally appeared in the Broadway show, "Rent," when it opened in 1996 and was performed on the Great White Way for 12 years, before the show closed in 2008. It has since become a go-to tune for choirs and is associated with World AIDS Day. This week, it will be performed by the cast of "Glee."
'Make You Feel My Love'
In what is certain to be one of the most difficult moments in the episode, Monteith's onscreen and off-screen girlfriend, Lea Michele (Rachel), will perform the song written by Bob Dylan in 1997. As the story goes, Dylan recorded it for i>Time Out of Mind, but Billy Joel released the song first that same year. Other covers include ones by Adele and Kelly Clarkson.
"We had a beautiful memorial for Cory in the auditorium and some of the castmembers sang and people spoke about him. It only felt right that we would do the same thing for Finn, so I felt it was very therapeutic," Michele recently shared of working on the episode.
