Want your first look at the character designs for movies like "Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Captain America: The Winter Solider"? Then look no further than the toys. As revealed at Wednesday night's Hasbro party, in advance of New York Comic Con, we found out some potentially juicy scoop as to what to expect in the movie sequels.
Toys, traditionally, are produced far in advance of a movie, and they provide one of your first looks at character designs and potential alternate takes. As we learned from reps from Hasbro, they were showing off — for the first time anywhere — looks at toys from a line "supporting" "Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Captain America: The Winter Solider," and even a sneak of Autobot leader Optimus Prime from "Transformers 4."
Most exciting was the look at the "Amazing Spider-Man 2" line. We've been hearing rumors that the Sinister Six, a collection of Spider-Man baddies would show up in the sequel, and given the lineup it seems like that may be all that confirmed. A Hasbro rep did clarify that the looks of the figures, which include a new costume for Spider-Man, Black Cat, Venom's off-spring Carnage, The Beetle, Electro, and even the Green Goblin may come from either their movie line or their comic book inspired line.
However, he also clarified that all of the figures are approved by the movie studio, and if not the exact look of the character, at the very least don't conflict with how the character might look in the movie.
That means that though you may not see Carnage or the Green Goblin in ASM2 (they, along with Beetle, seem to be sporting their look from the "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic book), these figures also aren't out of line with how they could appear onscreen. Or maybe they're exactly how they appear onscreen. Either way!
Next up was "Captain America: The Winter Solider." Our man in Hasbro was quick to clear up that both the Hydra Soldier and Mandroid (gigantic robot battle suit) were a comic book look, and not directly from the movie. But the Winter Solider character, a mysterious nemesis who goes up against Cap in the sequel, is movie accurate.
Last but not least was the brand-new Optimus Prime from "Transformers 4: Age of Extinction," who is still a truck. More intrepid Transformers fans than us will have to let us know what's different, but this figure is also movie accurate.
So there you go! With New York Comic Con kicking off this weekend, we'll see how much more movie info we can glean from toys. And no word yet on when these toy lines will be available from Hasbro, but you should be able to find them at finer toy stores everywhere.
