A new trailer for David O. Russell's "American Hustle" has boogied its way onto the Internet—leisure suits and all. And while the first look was light on the exposition and heavy on the Led Zeppelin, this latest elaborates on the forces at work in the '70s-set drama: respect, love, truth. And survival above all.
Inspired by the real-life events of the FBI sting operation known as Abscam, "American Hustle" follows con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), is forced to work for unhinged agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) to help nab other criminals — and a politician or two. The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence as Rosenfeld's ex-wife Rosalyn, and Jeremy Renner as politician Carmine Polito.
The film's been garnering plenty of Oscar buzz since the first trailer debut earlier this year, but it's something Russell tries not to dwell on.
"There's really nothing you can do about it," the director told MTV News recently. "I think you just have to do your best to humbly make the best movie you can make, and let the movie speak for itself. I think you can't really get caught up in that."
You can hardly blame awards-watchers for being bullish about the film's prospects, though. Russell's 2010 film "The Fighter" earned statuettes for stars Bale and Melissa Leo, while last year's "Silver Linings Playbook" helped Lawrence score her first win.
"You ask a lot and she brings it," Russell said of the 23-year-old actress. "That's what we both enjoy. Have a loose, trusting environment, and then she can bring it. That's what's fun to do."
"American Hustle" opens December 25.
