Tom Clancy: A Big-Screen Tribute

Bestselling author Tom Clancy died Tuesday night at the age of 66, The New York Times confirmed Wednesday morning. Apart from writing such enormously popular books like "The Hunt for Red October," "Patriot Games," and "Clear and Present Danger," he also started a multimedia empire that spanned to films, television and video games with the "Ghost Recon" and "Splinter Cell" series.

His stories of military intrigue were ever-present on bookstore shelves and at the multiplex, with two more high-profile adaptations in the works. As we look back on the life of Tom Clancy, we remember the big-screen moments that he helped bring to life.

"The Hunt For Red October"

Clancy's first book was also the book that launched his presence on the big screen. Alec Baldwin starred as Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst who would become the author's most popular hero. The book surged in popularity thanks to its Cold War storyline and a ringing endorsement from President Ronald Reagan. The film adaptation starred Alec Baldwin as Ryan and Sean Connery as the captain of a USSR submarine heading for the US. The film was a hit and pawned a string of successful Clancy adaptations.

"Patriot Games" And "Clear And Present Danger"

Two years later, Harrison Ford took over the Jack Ryan Mantle with these two films and continued the big screen success for Clancy and his signature with two more hits. Ford's take on the character brought more of the high intensity and bravado that made him a star. "Clear and Present Danger" went on to gross more than $200 million around the world, the biggest ever for the Jack Ryan series and one of the top grossing movies of the year.

"The Sum Of All Fears"

"Batman vs. Superman" isn't the first time that Ben Affleck has taken over the role of playing an iconic character. This 2002 adaptation of Clancy's 1991 was adapted for a post-Cold War world and involved a group of neo-Nazis stealing a nuclear weapon from Israel with the intention of detonating in the United States.

"Jack Ryan: Shadow One"

The next Clancy adaptation is shaping up to meet expectations set by the preceding films. "Shadow One" will follow "Star Trek" star Chris Pine as a young Jack Ryan, who must get to the bottom of a foreign scheme to crash the economy. The film was directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also stars alongside Keira Knightley.

"Splinter Cell"

What started as a video game series overseen by Clancy, but not based on any of his books, is becoming a movie with "The Dark Knight Rises" star Tom Hardy in line to star as covert operative Sam Fischer. It would be the first movie based on a Tom Clancy property that did not follow Jack Ryan or a story line from a novel.
