"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" doesn't blaze into theaters until November 22, but fans will begin hearing the sounds of the Quarter Quell on August 26 when the first soundtrack single — Coldplay's "Atlas" — is released via digital download.
Lionsgate and Republic Records announced the collaboration Friday, which marks the first time the Grammy-winning Brit band has recorded an original song for a film. (Their tracks have appeared in movies like "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Wedding Crashers" and "Garden State.")
"I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay, and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film," director Francis Lawrence said in a statement. "Their unwavering passion and excitement for the project elevated the collaboration even further, and we can't wait to share this music with audiences around the world."
The band, currently working on their sixth studio album, took to Twitter to announce the news, posting what appears to be lyrics for the song. They also changed their avatar to an illustration of a globe, which is inked onto the lyric sheet.
The second film in the "Hunger Games" franchise follows District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) as they return home from the arena and begin their victory tour. But as they travel through the districts, they realize their actions have sparked a revolution — one they might not be prepared for.
The soundtrack for the first "Hunger Games" film, The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond, hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and was nominated for three Grammy Awards, with Taylor Swift's "Safe & Sound" featuring The Civil Wars winning a gilded gramophone for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
More soundtrack artists are expected to be announced within the coming weeks. A release date for the album has yet to be set.
