'Catching Fire': 4 Things To Know Before It Blazes Into Theaters

Maybe you saw "The Hunger Games" last year and were more than mildly entertained. You're not going out and buying an "I Heart Peeta Bread" tee or growing out a rad Katniss braid or anything, but you are good for a ticket purchase once "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" hits theaters on November 22.

If this is the kind of tribute you consider yourself to be, well, we've gotta talk. 'Cause there are a few things you'll probably want to know about before heading back to Panem this year.

After all, the scenery is going to be a lot different this time. Not only does Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) have a new place to call home, but she and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) are going to be sent into all-new territories throughout the film. And, yes, poor Gale (Liam Hemsworth) is still resigned to watching from his place as a simple spectator ... for now, at least.

OK, so maybe that doesn't sound too different from the story you've already seen, but once you chew on these little tidbits (SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD), you'll really be ready to enjoy all the new layers to this sequel dish.

Quarter Quell

Every 25 years, the Capitol jazzes up (read: adds a whole new layer of evil to) the Games — whether for the ritzy sponsor-spectators' entertainment or for their stated reason: to celebrate the anniversary of those wily districts going down after their revolt. Our pal Haymitch, for example, survived and won the Second Quarter Quell Games, which reaped double the usual normal number of tributes as an added challenge.

Supposedly, these twisty instructions were written out ages and ages ago, but by the time the 75th annual Hunger Games comes along, well, the new Third Quarter Quell Games rule seems awfully convenient indeed.

Victory Woes

If you were at all wondering why Haymitch was such an elusive creature even within the tight-knit District 12 community, it's because when he won the Games, he not only got to do his own bidding and "stay alive," but he was also given a fancy house in Victor's Village and became flush with booze and cash. For more than two decades, he's been the neighborhood's sole occupant, but now that Katniss and Peeta are fellow winners, he's suddenly got some neighbors.

The two won't get to cozy up in their new digs for long, though, because one of the joys of graduating from tribute to victor is getting wheeled around the entire country and shown off as the Capitol's newest shiny toy. Prepare for some major traintastic tension between them, Peetniss lovers.

Arena #2

Unless you've gone completely dark on the entertainment scene, chances are you've seen the previews for "Catching Fire" by now, which means you already figured out that Katniss and Peeta are about to get chucked back into the Games — this time, with some former victors who are all spiky-toothed and huge and stuff. Yikes.

And whereas the first "Hunger Games" arena was basically just a big forest landscape, the new layout is a whole lot more menacing. Sure, there are still trees, but this time the place is a mini-beach circle surrounded on all sides by a thick jungle and no fresh water. And just past the tree line are a multitude of dangers, like tidal waves, paralyzing gas and attack monkeys, to name just a few. The only place to hide is in plain sight.

Noobs

There are a ton of new faces to come in the second "Hunger Games" because, well, a lot of the old ones died off in the first movie. RIP Rue! Among them, there's a new head gamemaker with a fancy little watch, Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman), one super-sexy District 4 victor Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) — brace for the sugar cube scene, everyone — a fierce femme with a 'tude named Johanna Mason (Jena Malone), a pair of weirdo smarties called Nuts and Volts and some super-tough former career tributes who still relish their glory days killing off the competition.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opens November 22.
