Josh Hutcherson Pushing For LGBT 'Acceptance And Equality' At HALO Awards

"Hunger Games" star Josh Hutcherson is slated to make an appearance at the TeenNick HALO Awards, taking place later this month. He will honor one young person trying to make a difference in the world.

For this year's HALO Awards, the star is paired with honoree Zachary Kerr. The 19-year-old transgendered teen is transitioning from female to male and has become an advocate through the Greater Boston PFLAG organization. Hutcherson himself is also an activist, having founded the Straight But Not Narrow (SBNN) organization.

"Equal rights have been a huge part of my life from the day I was born," Hutcherson told MTV News in an exclusive statement. "My mom was raised by her two uncles who were both gay and passed away from AIDS before I was born. I didn't get to meet them, but they were amazing people and that made my family realize that there's no difference between a gay person and a straight person. We're all just people."

He added, "Zachary's an inspiration because he helps raise awareness about LGBT issues and he teaches everyone that it's OK to be you, whoever you are, and his message is all about acceptance and equality."

In an exclusive clip, Josh and Zachary meet up, and the young advocate tells the actor, "I am going to be a living, breathing example of what it means to be happy and GLBT."

The show, which will also honor Rocio Ortega, Miranda Fuentes and Denzel Thompson, is all about paying tribute to young people who are "Helping and Leading Others" (HALO) in their communities.

The show will go live at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday, November 17, at 8 p.m. ET on Nick at Nite. The HALO Awards will also include performances from Fall Out Boy and Austin Mahone and feature appearances from Queen Latifah, basketball player Chris Paul and "Pretty Little Liars" star Shay Mitchell.

Hutcherson's other big project, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," will hit theaters on November 22.
