If you've somehow managed to stay off the Internet since Thursday night, you might not have heard that Ben Affleck is the latest actor to play Batman, and that people on Twitter are having a lot of feelings about it.
Affleck now joins the ranks of a select group of actors who have played the Dark Knight, each with their own varying degree of neck mobility. How does the latest Caped Crusader stack up to his predecessors? We've got your rundown below.
Adam West
Years as Batman: "Batman," the ABC series, which ran from January 1966 to March 1968, 120 episodes in total. He also appeared in the 1966 film "Batman: The Movie."
Age while Batman: 38 to 40 years old
Pre-Batman career: West got his start in television Westerns and crime shows and appeared in several films, including "The Young Philadelphians" with Paul Newman and "Robinson Crusoe on Mars."
Post-Batman career: The actor struggled to find roles away from the Caped Crusader and mostly appeared in bit parts on television, often poking fun at his Batman persona.
Academy Awards: No nominations
Michael Keaton
Years as Batman: Tim Burton's "Batman" (1989) and "Batman Returns" (1992)
Age while Batman: 38 and 41 years old
Pre-Batman career: Keaton began his career as a stand-up comedian before transitioning to comedic film roles in "Mr. Mom," "Johnny Dangerously," and Burton's "Beetlejuice," which made him a household name.
Post-Batman career: Keaton has remained relatively busy since "Batman," but has never again approached that scale of success. He played Ray Nicolette in both Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" and Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight." Next he'll lead director Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," also starring Emma Stone and Zach Galifianakis.
Academy Awards: No nominations (but one MTV Movie Awards nomination!)
Val Kilmer
Years as Batman: Joel Schumacher's "Batman Forever" (1995)
Age while Batman: 35 years old
Pre-Batman career: Kilmer skyrocketed to fame thanks to the role of Iceman in "Top Gun" with Tom Cruise, and he stayed on top throughout the '80s and early '90s with parts in "Willow," "The Doors" and "Tombstone."
Post-Batman career: Immediately after "Batman Forever," Kilmer scored another hit with Michael Mann's "Heat." He has worked consistently since then in films like "The Saint," "Alexander" and the phenomenal "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."
Academy Awards: No nominations (but four MTV Movie Awards nominations!)
George Clooney
Years as Batman: Joel Schumacher's "Batman & Robin" (1997)
Age while Batman: 36 years old
Pre-Batman career: Clooney broke out thanks to a role on NBC's "ER" and two pre-Batman movies, "One Fine Day" and Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk Till Dawn."
Post-Batman career: Unlike the other Batmen up until that point, the future was much brighter post-Batman. "Out of Sight" and "Ocean's Eleven" helped establish the cool-guy persona that would go on to shape his acting career.
Academy Awards: Eight nominations, two wins
Christian Bale
Years as Batman: Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" (2005), "The Dark Knight" (2008) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012)
Age while Batman: 31, 34 and 38 years old
Pre-Batman career: Bale's career began early with roles in Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" and the Disney musical "Newsies." He then earned acclaim in indie dramas like "American Psycho" and "The Machinist."
Post-Batman career: Bale worked steadily during and after his time as Bruce Wayne. He has worked with acclaimed directors including Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog, Michael Mann and David O. Russell.
Academy Awards: One nomination, one win
Ben Affleck
Years as Batman: Zack Snyder's untitled "Man of Steel" sequel (2015)
Age while Batman: 42
Pre-Batman career: Affleck scored bit roles in "Dazed and Confused," "School Ties" and "Mallrats" before winning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for "Good Will Hunting." During the early 2000s, he fell out of public favor after his relationship with Jennifer Lopez ended. He staged a comeback as a director, eventually winning a Best Picture Oscar for "Argo."
Post-Batman career: Ask us again in 2015.
Academy Awards: Two nominations, two wins
