As everyone on Earth is aware by now, Ben Affleck will be playing Batman in Zack Snyder's upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel, a move that's brought out the worst in many die-hard Bat-fans who feel that the Academy Award-winning "Argo" director isn't worthy of filling Batman's boots. But what devotees to the iconic DC hero don't realize is that the role almost went to Josh Brolin.
MTV News' Josh Horowitz caught up with Brolin at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the actor was on hand to promote his new film "Labor Day," a new drama co-starring Kate Winslet and Tobey Maguire.
Brolin revealed just how much he knew about his missed opportunity... which turned out to be not a lot. "I don't know," answered Brolin. "I really don't know. I honestly don't know. I'm telling you, actually, the truth." The extra "I don't knows" were definitely needed to clarify, as withholding information about this exact sort of thing has become natural among actors. Brolin did reveal that he was apparently close enough to the role to start considering his own take on the vigilante.
"I started thinking about it personally, like, what are they going to do with this kind of older, wiser version," said Brolin, acknowledging the fact that this iteration of the character will act like a seasoned veteran compared to Henry Cavill's younger Superman. "I liked the idea. I thought it was a really interesting idea. But Ben's gotten so much flack from this, I actually got angry for him, not at him. Everybody else was angry at him. Now I'm curious to see what he does."
Many Batfleck detractors cited the Oscar winner's less-than-stellar turn as Daredevil in that character's 2003 film as a valid reason to attack the casting, a move that Brolin does not agree with.
"How are you going to bring up a movie that Ben did ten or fifteen years ago and try and [criticize his talent]? I mean, come on. The guy's matured and grown and look at the work he's doing now. I'm going to defend him literally until the death."
Brolin's next film--"Labor Day"--hits theaters on December 25th.
