Things were hard enough for Captain America in "The Avengers," having to deal with a new, confusing time period and an alien invasion simultaneously, and while there are no longer Chitauri flying through a portal in the sky, the modern world is no less complex.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" puts the Marvel spotlight back squarely on Steve Rogers, who is still coming to terms with beings asleep for more than 60 years, for the first time since 2011's "The First Avenger," and as the first trailer shows us, sometimes the return of a friend you thought you lost isn't always a good thing.
That's because Bucky Barnes, Cap's best bud from the war is back, despite having a very nasty fall in their previous adventure together. "The Winter Soldier" takes much of its inspiration from a beloved arc by comic book writer Ed Brubaker, who brought Bucky back from the dead as a Soviet super assassin with a bionic arm. In the new film, Sebastian Stan reprises his role as Bucky, but he's back with a much different look.
The Winter Soldier will not be the only problem that Cap will face in his new film. As an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America now has to contend with the moral minefield that is the modern geopolitical arena. (Sounds complicated, I know.) At the head of this dilemma is a new leader in S.H.I.E.L.D., Alexander Pierce, played by none other than acting legend Robert Redford.
Returning to the Marvel Universe are Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Cobie Smulders as Marie Hill. They're joined by new castmembers Anthony Mackie as the high-flying Falcon and "Revenge" star Emily VanCamp as Agent 13.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" hits theaters on April 4, 2014.
