'Glee' Rethinks Series Finale After Cory Monteith's Death

'I always knew how it would end,' says series co-creator Ryan Murphy. 'I knew what the last shot was – he was in it'

Following last week's episode of Glee – in which the cast bid farewell to Finn Hudson, the character played by recently deceased actor Cory Monteith – Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy has revealed that he had to rethink the ending of the series, which will end with its sixth season next year. He revealed his plans at a press conference at Los Angeles' Paley Center Wednesday night, which honored the FX Networks for whom he created American Horror Story.

Why Didn't Glee Reveal How Finn Hudson Died?

"The final year of the show. . . was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story," he told reporters, referring to the Rachel Berry character played by actress Lea Michele. "I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was, he was in it. I knew what the last line was – she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now."

Still, Murphy hinted that he's not totally devoid of hope. "I have a good idea," he said. "I'm going to tell the studio and the network [in a week] how after Cory's unfortunate passing we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honor, which I love."

In our review of the last week's episode, Katy Kroll described Monteith's sendoff as "emotionally charged," though she questioned the way the show's writers wrote off the character. "While Finn was indeed killed off, it was never revealed how he died," she wrote. "Suicide? Car accident? Art-imitating-life overdose? We'll never know."
