Last night "The Walking Dead" took a trip to the supermarket... And it's easily the most exciting thing the show has ever done. Zombies raining from the ceiling, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) blasting the undead on top of a pile of beer, and a frickin' helicopter crashing through the roof: the supermarket fight was epic.
To find out more about what happened behind the scenes, we caught up with the cast and crew of "The Walking Dead" on the premiere red carpet in Los Angeles and found Robert Kirkman in New York Comic Con. They both agreed that the scene wouldn't have happened without one person: special effects guru Greg Nicotero.
"That scene, we wouldn't have been able to pull off without Greg Nicotero directing," Kirkman told MTV News after the premiere of a behind-the-scenes documentary focusing on 10 years of the comic book. "He's able to pull double duty, and he's able to deal with every aspect of the makeup effects. That was a really intense makeup effects scene, but he was able to make it all work. He was able to pull off something bigger than the show has ever had before."
On the LA red carpet, producer Gale Anne Hurd agreed. "We did a combination of things. We shot on an actual location in Griffin, Georgia. And we're extremely lucky that our Emmy Award-winning visual effects maestro Greg Nicotero directed the episode," said Hurd. "There is a level and a scope of both practical effects and visual effects that's completely seamless."
Fan-favorite Steven Yuen, who plays Glenn on the show, also had nothing but praise for Nicotero's direction. "He has such a feel for the show," said Yuen. "He knows through the special effects what's going to show, what's going to play. He just choreographed it amazingly."
On the other hand, Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Sasha on the show and was just upgraded to series regular for season four, was shocked the scene even got pulled off. "When we saw the storyboard for that scene, we said, really? We're going to do all of this?"
Martin-Green noted that a lot of the scene was up to the actor's imaginations, and a number of parts of the scene were added in post (we're guessing the helicopter crash in particular). "It was amazing what little we did see," added Martin-Green.
Oh, and for you toy fans who want this scene immortalized forever on your shelf, we asked Kirkman if there was a chance we could see a statue of Daryl standing on the beer pile shooting zombies. Kirkman, grinning like a little kid on Christmas, said, "Probably eventually, I'm not going to lie!"
"The Walking Dead" is on AMC every Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET.
