It's a team-up that would make Peeta Mellark proud: bread-friendly sandwich chain Subway has teamed up with "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" to produce a line of "Fiery Footlongs," Sriracha-powered hoagies that hope to cure the hunger games happening at lunchtime in your tummy.
With that in mind, MTV News braved the army of Peacekeepers protecting the local Subway and snagged both of the sandwiches, the Sriracha Chicken Melt and the Sriracha Steak Melt. The line also includes the Buffalo Chicken sandwich and the Turkey Jalapeno Melt, but those were previously available, so we saved our stomachs and skipped them.
But the question remains: Which sandwich is our Gale and which our Peeta? With no distinctive brown hair and blond hair on them, respectively — thank Panem — we had to let our taste buds make the determination.
The sandwiches are similar: a pile of Subway shredded steak or chunks of chicken lumped onto bread with two triangles of pepper jack, toasted, and then slathered in creamy Sriracha sauce. We got lettuce and tomatoes on each, as well as green peppers on the chicken and banana peppers and black olives on the steak. True luxuries if you live anywhere but the Capitol, but hey, we like living it up.
Both sandwiches, despite the slight differences, were essentially the same (hey, kind of like Peeta and Gale! Weird). They both developed into mush in our mouths, the jack cheese barely detectable. The Sriracha sauce, though, does have a fair amount of heat to it. It's not the stinging, Tracker Jacker-like feeling of actual Sriracha, but we did need to snag a glass of water to continue chowing down.
The big differences were how the sauce interacted with the meat. The chicken was rubbery enough that we almost considered turning ourselves into an Avox, but the steak was ... not so bad. In fact, the sauce soaked nicely into the shredded steak, and we were almost able to finish the whole sandwich.
The chicken we couldn't finish, so we threw it at the girl we liked as she sat huddled, shivering in the cold rain, because that's how you express affection towards people.
Victor: The Sriracha Steak Melt, which was like a Quarter Quell in our mouths.
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will hit theaters on November 22, 2013.
