Over the course of two films, Loki has become an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing in "Thor" and then taking on the entire team in "The Avengers." With "Thor: The Dark World" scheduled to hit theaters on November 8, we're set for the third appearance of the Nordic god of mischief, but beyond that, no one knows what the future holds for the fan favorite.
Marvel Studios co-president Kevin Feige, recently speaking with journalists to promote the upcoming sequel, mentioned that according to the current plan, we probably won't see Loki until a hypothetical "Thor 3," since the villain slot in the "Avengers" sequel is being taken over by James Spader as Ultron.
When MTV News sat down with Tom Hiddleston, the man behind the god, we asked how he is feeling, potentially staying away from the character longer than he has ever before, but at the moment, it's a little too early to say.
"I don't know," Hiddleston told us. "I won't know, I guess, until I miss him, and I'm sure I will."
Loki may disappear for a short period of time, but Hiddleston isn't going anywhere. The 32-year-old actor saw his star rise very quickly in the wake of "Thor" and "The Avengers," and producers have taken notice. He recently signed onto Guillermo del Toro's next film "Crimson Peak," replacing another favorite, Benedict Cumberbatch.
The Marvel villain could, however, take a more unexpected route back to the big screen. A recent online fan petition on Change.org collected over 27,000 signatures, asking Marvel to produce a Loki film.
While Hiddleston is flattered by the petition, he has his own thoughts about the nature of the character and whether he can support his own film.
"I do think that [Loki and Thor] define [each other]. There is no Loki without Thor. There is no Thor without Loki," Hiddleston said. "There's something in their particular chemistry that makes it complete. If there was a Loki film, I wonder how that would be, but listen, it's an amazing compliment that that's even an idea."
"Thor: The Dark World" opens in theaters on November 8.
